This 10-kroon commemorative coin has been struck to celebrate the re-issue of the Estonian kroon on June 20 1992, sixty-four years after the kroon was first issued.
On the obverse of the coin the Estonian national bird, the Barn Swallow, is depicted. The Barn Swallow lives near houses and a nest of this bird is considered a lucky charm to the household.
The Coat of Arms of the Republic of Estonia dates back more than 700 years and is depicted on the reverse of the coin.
The Republic of Estonia was founded in 1918. Independence was interrupted in 1940 by the annexation of Estonia by the Soviet Union and the Republic of Estonia regained its independence in 1990.
Estonia is one of the smallest countries in Europe (somewhat larger than Denmark or Switzerland). The population is about 1.5 million, one-third of whom live in the capital Tallinn, an old Hansa town.
